Last month I took a look at some of the most popular subscription beauty boxes available on the market at a range of price points. This month I’d like to review one of them, kindly sent to me for this very purpose – the YOU Beauty Discovery box.
Price: £6.95 including postage.
What’s included: Two sample products chosen by you as well as a few extra goodies thrown in; a mini YOU magazine.
Brands included: Elemis, BareMinerals, Percy and Reed, Illamasqua, Mavala, Charles Worthington and L’Occitane amongst many others.
Extra benefits: Around four times a year, luxury themed, limited edition boxes are released, each containing between 6 and 12 samples. The website is also packed with information on new brands, tips and tricks and ‘how to’s.
For just £6.95 including postage, this was a beauty box I could really see myself subscribing to even before I received it. It’s pretty affordable, and I love the idea of receiving treats in the post every month. I also like the fact that you can choose two samples from a selection so that you are never disappointed with the contents of your box – unless none of the samples take your fancy, of course – but I imagine that must be rare. I clicked through to look back at samples available in previous boxes and there were always at least a couple of products that caught my fancy. There are also added extras promised which, not only are a lovely surprise, but introduce you to brands and products you may not have thought have trying before.
So on to my box… The products were picked for me by the lovely Charlotte and didn’t disappoint.
First up was a full sized #LipGlam 100% Natural Lip Balm. Made from natural lanolin, this claims to reduce skin roughness by 40% in 60 minutes and deliver hydration for up to 8 hours. It can also be used on cuticles, brows, dry skin and split ends. I am a bit fussy about lip balm and prefer a cream consistency, however for my husband, who is a tree surgeon and out in all weathers, this was perfect. Although it caused a few sniggers from his team – #LipGlam is not the most manly of brands after all – he said it did the job brilliantly, protecting his lips from a keen wind and only needing to be reapplied once during the day. For myself, I tested the balm out on some contact dermatitis – it made a real difference over the course of one night – and used it as a brow gel, at which job it was very effective.
Next was a full sized Illamasqua lipstick in Sangers. This is described as a matte, classic blue/red tone which suits most skin tones and it contains vitamin E for a smooth application. I love Illamasqua products and was delighted with this lippy which had impressive staying power. As with all bright lip products, especially matte ones, it did require some maintenance, but the colour was fab and this is certainly one for my kit.
My added extras were a Nakd Berry Delight bar – a yummy treat which kept me going through a slightly stressful shopping trip with a 2 year old and 3 month old in tow – and a generous sample duo of Dove’s Youthful Vitality Shampoo and Conditioner. This wouldn’t have suited everybody, being for aging hair, but now in my early 30s, I guess this is the kind of hair product I should be thinking about using. There is probably enough in each tube to last me around four washes but I do have waist length hair so these would last the average person longer. I have squirreled them away to take with me when I go on a short break later this year.
The YOU mini magazine was more of a booklet explaining the products included in my box, but it was useful to glance at.
In conclusion, I was extremely impressed with the contents of my YOU Beauty Discovery Box and I shall certainly consider subscribing in the very near future.
